Great Scottish Inventions

Did you know that the world would be a strange place without the Scots? Much of what Scottish people have invented has changed the world beyond recognition.

Imagine a world without television, telephones, penicillin, antiseptics, lawn mowers, microwave ovens, marmalade, computer games, golf, waterproof mackintoshes, bicycles, decimal points, paraffin, colour photography, motor insurance, postage stamps, savings banks, ultrasound scanners, vacuum flasks, radar and many other things… These are all Scottish inventions or discoveries!

Why has Scotland produced so many great innovators and entrepreneurs? It’s difficult to pinpoint one particular factor, but the Scots are renowned for working hard and placing a high value on education. Maybe even the Scottish weather has played a part…

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national poet and icon, Robert Burns. To celebrate, 2009 has been declared Scotland’s “Year of Homecoming” and Robert Burns will be celebrated in more ways than the traditional Burns Supper in January.

A number of special events and festivals will be taking place across Scotland throughout the year, designed to celebrate Scotland’s great contributions to the world.

Edinburgh

Whisky
There are few products which are so closely related to the land of their birth than Scotch malt whisky. Distilleries all around Scotland offer tours and tasting sessions, providing visitors ample opportunities to find out if whisky really does taste better in Scotland…?

Golf
Scotland is famous as the home of golf, the main attraction for visitors being the Old Course at St Andrews. With only one hour journey time from Edinburgh and seven golf courses in total, St Andrews is a must for any golf fan.

Haggis, tatties and neeps
A traditional Scottish meal made from a spiced mutton sausage (haggis), mashed potato (tatties) and turnips (neeps). You have to try it at least once! As well as haggis, Scotland is also famous for delicious smoked fish and seafood.
